Mr. Cass Claude



Hi, my name is Cass Claude and I am excited about teaching Grade 6 at Cold Lake Middle School this year! I have spent the last eleven years teaching Grades 5-8 and look forward to my fifth year at this amazing facility.

 My teaching assignment this year includes Mathematics and Science to students in grade 6, as well as a computer technology option class.

In math class, students practiced expressing numbers in standard and written form today. In science, we discussed biotic and abiotic elements of a forest ecosystem.


Families are encouraged to attend our pancake breakfast which will be served at 8:30 tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow is "Bully-Free" day. Students are encouraged to wear pink to take a stand against bullying.

Math: Students are encouraged to finish the worksheets they were given today related to fractions, ratios, percent and decimals. They could also complete the cumulative review for chapters 4-7 on page 238 of their textbooks.

Science: Today reviewed some questions from our Trees and Forests Unit and students have been given review questions from the Sky Science unit to practice with.

Probability Games

Note to students and parents: As the school year quickly approaches its end, our focus this week will be on finishing the Grade 6 Math and Science Curricula. This means that students should expect a unit test on Air and Flight later this week in Science class and on Probability (Chapter 10) in math class. After this week our focus will be on reviewing the material learned throughout the year to help students get ready for their Provincial Achievement Tests.


On a personal note, my wife and I are expecting the birth of our second child some time in the next couple of weeks. As a result, students may expect to have a substitute teacher fill in for me for a few days. I have prepared various review materials for this teacher to give students in my absence if the birth occurs before they write their tests. (My wife is not fond of the idea of going 2-3 weeks overdue in order to accomodate my teaching schedule Smile).

Students participating in Track and Field Wards competition are reminded to finish Chapter 4, lesson 5 for Wednesday.

All students should start preparing for the Math Unit Test on Chapter 4 which will take place this Friday and a unit test on Aerodynamics and Flight which will take place next week.

Students completed Chapter 4, Lesson 4 in Math class today. Students in 6C tested the parachutes that they made in class yesterday.

Thursday, May 22, 2014:

Students are practicing making parachutes in science class and learning how to write questionnaires and perform experiments to attain data in Math class. Students have also learned how to display their results using double bar graphs.

Mrs. Urlacher and I look forward to reading the stories and news articles that students wrote today as part of their ELA Part A achievement tests. Good luck to the students representing our school at the School Band Competition in Red Deer. Reminder to all students, be prepared to write your Math Chapter 11 (Polygons) unit test on Tuesday of next week. You can use this pre-test to help you prepare. Here are the answers to the pre-test.

Students were engaged in Track and Field activities on these two days. Congratulations to everyone for trying their hardest in these events.

In math class, students worked on Chapter 11, Lessons 6 and 7 in preparation for their unit test which is scheduled for next Tuesday, May 20th.

Today, students worked on Chapter 11, Lesson 5 in math and learned how blimps, helicopters, jet engines and rockets work in science.

Wednesday, May 7th, 2014:

Students have been learning to classify triangles according to side and angle (I.E. Chapter 11, Lessons 1- 4) and about how hot air balloons and other lighter than aircraft can fly. Please discuss these things at home.

Students should also start preparing for Track and Field competition which will take place next Monday and Tuesday (afternoons only).

Finally, students should be reminded to sharpen-up their writing ability (i.e. short story and news article writing) as they write Part A of their L.A. P.A.T. on Wednesday, May 14th.

Thursday, May 9th, and Friday May 10th, 2013:

Mr. Claude was away on Thursday, but the substitute teacher assigned Chapter 11, Lesson 3 for homework in math and students watched a video on flight in science class.

Friday's homework: Finish Chapter 11, Lesson 4 "Constructing Triangles". Students will require a ruler and a protractor for this activity. Here is a link to the French version of this lesson.

On Wednesday, students were given field trip forms for swimming and bowling at the end of the year. Swimming will cost $5 / student and Bowling will cost $8 per student. These forms are due by next Wednesday.

This weekend, students should be preparing for their Language Arts Part A P.A.T. which will take place on Wednesday morning (practice story writing and news article writing).

Track and Field will take place on Monday and Wednesday afternoon next week. Students should dress for the events and the weather.

In Science, we have been learning about the control surfaces of fixed-wing aircraft and how they effect the three basic movements of pitch, roll, and yaw.

Finish / Review the Chapter 8 Review and earlier lessons from Chapter 8, in preparation for your test next Tuesday. Understand how to classify and measure angles with a protractor, how to calculate the perimeter of a polygon and the area of a rectangle. Also, understand how to calculate the volume of a rectangular prism and solve problems with volume.

Math: If you have not yet done so, please complete Chapter 8, Lesson 7. The "gist" of this lesson is that the 4 angles on a quadrilateral always equal 360 degrees, so if you know 3 of them, you can find the fourth by adding them together and subtracting the sum from 360 degrees.

Class Pre-Holiday Party

Note to parents: 6C and 6U are both planning to have a "pre-holiday" class party on Thursday, December 20th at the end of the day (i.e. during block 6 from 2:30 -3:25p.m.). I encourage students in my homeroom to bring in treats / drinks etc. if it is something that they would like to do.  

Next Friday, our school is planning on providing a Turkey Lunch for all students and to attend a movie in the afternoon at Grand Square Cinema. Permission Forms for the movie must go home today.

Mr. C. will be away tomorrow (Wednesday) at teacher meetings. Students will receive the second of two pre-tests to help them prepare for the math test on Thursday. Students should review chapter 6 in their textbooks and some of the links below to help them further.

All students participating in the Christmas concert tomorrow should arrive by 6:45 p.m.. Students in the school band need to arrive by 6:30 p.m..

Thursday, December 6th, 2012:

In preparation for the test next week, students should complete the Chapter 6 Review over the weekend. Students can skip questions 3 and 8 of this review.

No new homework, but students should start preparing for the math test on Ratios and Percents ( that they can expect next week.

Also, students may wish to practice singing the "Longitude / Latitude Song" for fun and to solidify their understanding of this scientific concept.

In science today, students watched the first 12 minutes of this Solar System video and wrote notes about the sun and each of the planets based on the video.

Monday, November 5th, 2012:

Since busses were not running today, students did not have a regular school day. As a result, our Math test has been postponed to Wednesday of this week. The Chapter 3, Review that was assigned on Friday will be collected tomorrow.

Also, students should expect to write the Trees and Forests Unit Test either Thursday of this week or Monday of next week and are encouraged to study their notes from class to prepare for it.

Students are learning how to classify trees by looking at their leaves and are starting a new unit on number relationships in math. Also, students in my homeroom each received a free piece of pizza for showing their school spirit last week.

Students in my math classes have been exploring the value of one billion (which as it turns out is really, really big). In Science, students have started to think about the importance of Trees and Forests.

No homework has yet been assigned in either of these classes.


All students will be treated to a pancake breakfast tomorrow morning, starting at 8:15 a.m.. As students arrive at school thereafter, they will be served pancakes in our hive.  Bring your appetites!

Tomorrow is also Anti-Bullying Day: Students are encouraged to wear pink in order to show zero tolerance for bullying at our school.
